Governor Greg Abbott announced Aug. 11 that $7,746,000 in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants have been awarded to 28 organizations in the North Texas region, with the funding expected to provide services to an estimated more than 4,900 local veterans.
The grants are administered by the Texas Veterans Commission and were announced as part of the commission’s Grants Across Texas Tour, according to a news release from the governor’s office.
“Texas will always support the brave men and women who fought for the freedom and liberties we enjoy today,” Abbott said in the release. “These grants will provide crucial support and services to veterans and their families in the DFW area. We are proud to support our nation’s heroes and help them prosper for generations to come.”
“I sincerely thank each of our grant recipients for their commitment to serving our veterans,” said TVC Commission Secretary Chuck Wright, a Marine veteran, in the release. “North Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area are home to a large veteran population and robust military presence. It is great to see the community give back to those who served our country.”
Recipients include Collin County, which received $950,000 across four grants for veterans treatment courts, financial assistance and clinical counseling; the city of Fort Worth, awarded $640,000 for housing and financial assistance; and Patriot Paws Service Dogs, which received $400,000 for its service dog program. Other awards support veterans treatment courts in Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties, food services through area Meals on Wheels programs, trade skills training, housing assistance, clinical and non-clinical mental health services, and elder care, according to the release.
In May, TVC commissioners approved 190 grants totaling more than $40.8 million to 160 organizations across the state, funding anticipated to provide direct services to more than 125,600 veterans, their dependents and surviving spouses, the governor’s office said. Since 2009, more than $400 million has been awarded through 1,790 Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants, including the current 2026-2027 grant cycle.
The grants support services ranging from emergency financial assistance and transportation to legal services, family support, home modification, and rental and mortgage assistance. Veterans seeking help can locate participating organizations in their area through the commission’s Grant Services Directory, the release noted.
