Six organizations serving veterans in West Texas will share $1.7 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants, Governor Greg Abbott announced Sept. 3.
The awards, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission as part of its Grants Across Texas Tour, are expected to provide services to an estimated 1,800 local veterans, according to the governor’s news release.
“Texas honors the sacrifices made by veterans who selflessly answered the call to serve,” Abbott said in the release. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services they need to thrive across West Texas.”
The City of El Paso received $140,000 for transportation services. El Paso County received two awards, $285,000 for financial assistance through a veterans county service office and $400,000 for its veterans treatment court. Jeff Davis County received $200,000 and the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission $275,000, both under the Housing for Texas Heroes category. Project Amistad received $200,000 for clinical counseling, and the YWCA El Paso del Norte Region received $200,000 for family and child support services.
“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said Chip Osborne, the commission’s director of veteran services and an Army veteran. “El Paso and the West Texas region have a strong military community and are home to many veterans. It’s great to see the community give back to those who served!”
The West Texas awards are part of a larger round. Commissioners approved 190 grants totaling more than $40.8 million to 160 organizations statewide in May, funding anticipated to reach more than 125,600 veterans, dependents and surviving spouses. Since 2009, through the current 2026-2027 grant cycle, the state has awarded more than $400 million through 1,790 Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants supporting services ranging from emergency financial aid and transportation to legal help, home modification and rental assistance.
