The Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration broke ground on Segment 6 of the Loop 1604 North Expansion in San Antonio, marking the final segment of the $1.4 billion project, according to a July 30 news release from TxDOT.
The $182 million Texas Clear Lanes project will improve Loop 1604 from Judson Road to I-35 and create a seamless connection to the $3.5 billion I-35 Northeast Expansion, linking the two largest transportation investments in the San Antonio region. Together, the projects represent nearly $5 billion in infrastructure improvements designed to reduce congestion, improve safety, and support economic growth, the agency said.
TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams and Federal Highway Administrator Sean McMaster were joined at the ceremony by Texas Transportation Commissioner Alex Meade, TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez, and other regional transportation leaders, according to the release.
“This project is one of the most impactful in the country: relieving congestion, improving safety, and enhancing commuting times for all who rely on this critical corridor,” McMaster said in the release, noting that the federal government is investing nearly $790 million in the effort.
“San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and investments like Loop 1604 and I-35 NEX are critical to keeping people and freight moving safely and efficiently,” Williams said. Benavidez added that an accelerated delivery approach moved all six segments of the expansion from planning to construction within six years.
Pulice Construction, Inc. will be awarded the construction contract, and the project is expected to be complete in 2029, TxDOT said. Once finished, Segment 6 will provide the final link between the Loop 1604 North Expansion and I-35 NEX corridors.
