Governor Abbott Announces Applications Open for $31M in Veterans Assistance Grants

Gov. Greg Abbott announced that applications are open through Dec. 2 for an estimated $31 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants administered by the Texas Veterans Commission, according to an Oct. 5 release.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Oct. 5 that applications are open for an estimated $31 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants, which are administered by the Texas Veterans Commission, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Nonprofit organizations and local government agencies that provide direct services to veterans may apply.

According to the release, the application portal opened at 5 p.m. Central time on Oct. 2, 2026, and closes at 5 p.m. Central time on Dec. 2, 2026.

“Texas stands with the men and women who wore the uniform,” Abbott said in the release. “These grants put $31 million in the hands of local organizations that deliver housing, mental health care, job training, and other direct services to veterans and their families. Texas will always honor those who answered the call.”

The governor’s office said the announcement follows the commission’s 2026 Grants Across Texas tour, during which commissioners and staff presented more than $40 million in grants to 160 organizations serving veterans from El Paso to Beaumont.

Texas Veterans Commission Chairwoman Laura Koerner, a Navy veteran, said in the release that the fund shows how local organizations change lives. “It is not just about funding. It is about partnership, and communities that come together,” Koerner said. “Every grant extends our mission so that no veteran stands alone when it comes to home repair, mental health resources, trade skills, and other vital services.”

The release outlined new terms for the upcoming funding period. The grant term is 24 months, and awards range from $50,000 to $600,000. An applicant may apply for and receive up to three grants, and a county government may receive up to four, including a Veteran Treatment Court grant.

Since 2009, the commission has awarded more than $400 million through more than 1,790 grants, according to the release. The grants support housing modification, rental assistance and homelessness prevention; mental health care, experiential therapeutic services and service dogs; legal aid and transportation; food, financial assistance and assistive technology; and vocational and trade-skills training.

The commission awards grants in five categories: General Assistance, Housing for Texas Heroes, Veterans Mental Health, Veterans Treatment Courts and Veteran County Service Offices, the governor’s office said.

Organizations may review the request for applications, eligibility rules, webinars and frequently asked questions at tvc.texas.gov/grants/grantseekers. Veterans seeking help can find organizations in their area at tvc.texas.gov/fund, the release said.
