IRS Grants Federal Disaster Tax Relief to Texans in 62 Counties Hit by July Storms

Gov. Greg Abbott announced that the IRS granted his request for federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses in 62 Texas counties affected by July’s severe storms and flooding, according to an Oct. 28 release.

The Internal Revenue Service has granted Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses in 62 Texas counties affected by July’s severe storms and flooding, the governor announced Oct. 28, according to a news release from his office.

The IRS postponed certain federal tax filing and payment deadlines through Feb. 1, 2027, for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the 62 counties, the release said. Abbott had issued a state disaster proclamation covering the 62 counties on July 14 and requested the tax relief for taxpayers in all of them on Oct. 15, according to the governor’s office.

“Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods now have more time to file and pay federal taxes,” Abbott said in the release. “I thank Secretary Bessent and the IRS for this relief to help families and businesses rebuild.”

The counties covered include Atascosa, Bandera, Bastrop, Bexar, Blanco, Brazoria, Burnet, Comal, Fort Bend, Galveston, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Harris, Hays, Kendall, Kerr and Williamson, among others listed in the release. Taxpayers can consult the governor’s office release for the complete list of eligible counties.

The announcement comes as Texas prepares for another round of heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding, which Abbott addressed in a separate Oct. 28 release activating state emergency response resources.
