Texas Children’s Hospital Opens Detransition Clinic Under Settlement With Attorney General Paxton

Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that Texas Children’s Hospital has opened a Detransition Clinic, fulfilling a central requirement of the settlement he secured with the hospital in May, according to an Oct. 27 news release.

Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that Texas Children’s Hospital has opened what his office described as the country’s first Detransition Clinic, according to an Oct. 27 news release from the Office of the Attorney General.

The release said the clinic fulfills a central requirement of the settlement Paxton secured with the hospital in May. The attorney general’s office described it as a multidisciplinary clinic that provides medical care to patients who previously underwent gender-transition interventions.

It offers detransition-related medical care to patients through age 21, along with detransition-related obstetric and gynecologic care to patients older than 21. Patients may receive services at different Texas Children’s locations depending on their needs and their care team’s recommendations, the office said.

According to the release, the settlement also required the hospital to pay $10 million to resolve claims Paxton brought under the Texas Health Care Program Fraud Prevention Act for billing Texas Medicaid for what the office called unallowable and illegal gender-transition interventions.

According to the office, the settlement compelled the permanent termination of privileges of multiple physicians and requires the hospital to amend its bylaws so that performing gender-transition interventions triggers automatic relinquishment of medical staff privileges. The resolution followed an investigation led by the office’s Healthcare Program Enforcement Division.

“In accordance with my settlement with Texas Children’s Hospital, the nation’s first-ever Detransition Clinic is now open,” Paxton said in the release. He said he will continue to ensure the clinic provides the care and support that victims of what he called the radical left’s gender ideology deserve.

Texas Children’s is required to fully fund the clinic’s services for its first five years so patients may receive care at no cost, and to promote the clinic on its website, according to the release. Additional information is available on the hospital’s website, and the attorney general’s office also directed readers to a page for donations to the clinic’s efforts.
