Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Workforce Commission announced a Skills Development Fund grant of $81,867 to El Paso Community College in partnership with Novipax Buyer LLC, according to an Aug. 6 news release from the agency. The grant will fund customized training for 40 new and current workers at Novipax, preparing them for high-demand careers in manufacturing.
The Skills Development Fund is the state’s workforce training grant program, designed to help businesses upskill their new or incumbent workers, the commission said. Working with public community and technical colleges, workforce development boards, and the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, TWC provides customized, innovative training to Texas businesses of all sizes.
“This Skills Development Fund grant will prepare 40 new and current workers for high-demand manufacturing careers,” Governor Abbott said in the release. “Texas invests in the skilled workforce our employers need and our people deserve. Partnerships between community colleges and private industry produce the results that expand opportunity and secure high-wage jobs for Texans across the state.”
TWC Chairman Joe Esparza said the $81,867 investment “underscores our commitment to providing Texas employers with the innovative, industry-specific training solutions they need to grow their business.” The collaboration between El Paso Community College and Novipax, he said, highlights the fund’s ability “to bridge the gap between education and industry,” ensuring the regional manufacturing workforce is prepared to fill critical in-demand jobs now and in the future.
Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III presented the award to representatives from the college, Novipax, and other local partners during a ceremony held at El Paso Community College, the agency said.
Since its inception in 1996, the Skills Development Fund has provided training opportunities in partnership with more than 5,000 employers, helping to upgrade or support the creation of over 446,000 jobs throughout Texas, according to TWC.
