Mass shooting in Midland leaves one dead, nine injured

One person is dead and nine others are injured following an active shooting in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning that ended with the suspected shooter also dead, according to city officials and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“We can confirm that the active shooter situation is resolved and the shooter is now deceased,” Midland Mayor Lori Blong said during a press conference.

During an hours-long law enforcement response, officials said personnel used drones and robotic equipment to assess the scene and verify the suspect’s death before lifting emergency measures, according to city officials. Authorities have not disclosed how the suspect died.

The shooting was reported shortly after 8 a.m. near West Wall Street and Eisenhower Drive, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Midland police responded to the area at 8:03 a.m., and emergency crews arrived shortly afterward.

According to DPS, when officers arrived, the suspect, identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa, began firing shots at officers and bystanders before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic building in the 4600 block of West Wall Street.

Earlier in the day, officials said officers had contained the suspect within a secured perimeter while negotiations and tactical operations continued, according to city officials and DPS.

Authorities initially reported 11 shooting victims but later revised the figure after determining the suspect had been included in the count. Officials now say 10 people were shot, including one victim who died at the scene, according to city officials.

Nine others were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital. Hospital officials said three patients had been released by Friday afternoon, while several others remained in surgery.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, according to city officials and DPS.

Investigators have not released the names of the victims or the suspect. Officials also said they also have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, according to city officials.

According to DPS, Villarreal had been wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after allegedly firing multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

At the request of the Midland Police Department, the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, according to DPS.
