The Texas Department of Transportation reported Sept. 3 that August brought measurable progress on highway projects from San Antonio to El Paso, including the opening of San Antonio’s first diverging diamond interchange and the reopening of a flood-damaged Uvalde County bridge weeks ahead of schedule.
The monthly recap, written by TxDOT’s Ryan LaFontaine, arrives as the agency scales up spending. The department noted that Governor Greg Abbott and TxDOT announced a new 10-year transportation plan carrying a projected total investment of $138 billion, anchored by the 2027 Unified Transportation Program that the Texas Transportation Commission approved in August. That program includes $95 billion for projects over the next decade, supported by an additional $43 billion in development and routine maintenance.
In San Antonio, the agency said work continued on the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, which is widening a 23-mile stretch of the North Side from four to 10 lanes and is expected to be finished in 2028. Engineers expect half the corridor to be complete by year’s end. Construction on the $156 million Loop 410/San Pedro Improvement Project is scheduled to begin in September, covering seven miles near San Antonio International Airport, while a pedestrian safety project began along U.S. 281 in Pleasanton.
In Uvalde County, crews completed more than $3 million in emergency repairs to the FM 481 bridge in 37 days after July flooding washed out an approach, reopening the crossing Aug. 23. Near Seguin, the $245.2 million I-10 project between FM 464 and SH 130 is running ahead of schedule, with substantial completion expected in summer 2029.
Montgomery County projects neared the finish line, according to the department, with the SH 105 reconstruction and widening between South Loop 336 and FM 1484 at 98 percent complete and an FM 1097 widening at 95 percent. In Copperas Cove, two projects worth more than $114 million advanced, including a $107.5 million U.S. 190 expansion at roughly 18 percent complete.
In West Texas, TxDOT finished a new auxiliary lane at the Sherwood Way entrance to Loop 306 in San Angelo and began installing digital message signs there. Crews set the first beams on phase II of the Borderland Expressway in El Paso, a nearly 11-mile route intended as an alternate to I-10, and began replacing aging overhead freeway signs in Wichita Falls and Vernon.
