Texas High Schoolers Show Academic Progress on Spring 2026 STAAR End-of-Course Exams

The Texas Education Agency released the Spring 2026 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) End-of-Course (EOC) results, revealing academic gains across all five tested high school subjects.

The metrics, which include individual student performance in Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and U.S. History, show that the percentage of test-takers meeting grade-level standards expanded statewide across every core subject and student demographic group.

According to the June 10 data release, student proficiency in Biology, English I, and English II maintained an upward trajectory and has officially surpassed pre-pandemic benchmarks. In U.S. History, 70% of students achieved grade-level expectations. Notably, Algebra I performance saw a substantial turnaround, with 54% of students meeting grade level—marking a seven-percentage-point surge compared to the previous year’s results.

The positive trends extended to historically vulnerable student subsets, as emergent bilingual students, economically disadvantaged students, and those receiving special education services all posted increased grade-level passing rates in every EOC category.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath credited the positive outcomes to focused instruction, high expectations, and hard work by students, educators, and families. Morath also noted that the academic turnaround may be reflective of the Texas Legislature’s recent statewide ban on cell phone use in classrooms, which has minimized distractions during the school day.

Individual score results are now accessible to families through local school district portals or TexasAssessment.gov, while aggregate data by campus and region has been published to the Texas Assessment Research Portal.

Public school performance data for grades 3 through 8 will follow shortly, with the state scheduled to release those results on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
