Gov. Greg Abbott has asked the U.S. Treasury Department for federal disaster tax relief for Texas individuals and businesses affected by the severe storm and flooding event that began July 14, according to an Oct. 15 news release from the governor’s office.
Abbott sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent requesting a temporary suspension of applicable federal tax filing and payment deadlines, along with a waiver of applicable late fees, for taxpayers in all 62 counties covered by the state disaster proclamation, the release said.
“Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods need this relief,” Abbott said in the release. “I urge Secretary Bessent to suspend the tax deadlines and waive all late fees and penalties so families and businesses can rebuild.”
According to the governor’s office, Abbott issued a state disaster proclamation on July 14 covering 62 counties. A Major Disaster Declaration was approved Sept. 1, 2026, for 23 of those counties, the release said.
The letter requests relief for taxpayers in all 62 counties covered by the state proclamation, according to the release. The governor’s office said the full text of Abbott’s letter to Bessent is available on its website.
