Governor Greg Abbott announced more than $114 million in housing tax credits to finance the development or rehabilitation of 70 rental properties across Texas, a move the state says will create or preserve more than 4,400 affordable rental units, according to a July 23 news release.
The credits, administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, are intended to expand housing options and offer reduced rents as the state’s population grows, the release said. The agency described the allocation as the largest in its history.
“As our state grows, we must ensure that Texans have access to the affordable housing they need to thrive,” Abbott said. “Over $114 million in housing tax credits will put quality, affordable homes within reach for hardworking Texas families. In partnership with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, we will build a more affordable and prosperous Texas for generations.”
The Housing Tax Credit Program is a central tool for financing new developments and preserving existing affordable housing, according to TDHCA Executive Director Bobby Wilkinson. “The Housing Tax Credit Program is a key tool for creating new developments and preserving affordable housing in our communities,” Wilkinson said, adding that the agency is committed to bringing high-quality, affordable housing to Texas residents. The state attributed the size of the allocation in part to a 12 percent increase in the federal tax credit ceiling under the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The agency noted that the list of 2026 application awards is subject to change should any developments be unable to move forward, the release said.
