The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) are teaming up on a safe-driving campaign aimed at ending the streak of daily traffic deaths on Texas roads, according to a Nov. 5 TxDOT news release.
The agency said someone has died on Texas roads every day since Nov. 7, 2000, and that more than 95,000 people have been killed in traffic crashes in that time. The campaign carries the hashtag #EndTheStreakTX.
Beginning Nov. 7, DPS troopers will distribute safe-driving tips during traffic stops for two weeks, TxDOT said. The tips ask drivers to buckle up, avoid distractions, drive safe speeds, get a sober ride, and move over or slow down. The goal, the agency said, is to encourage everyone to drive like a Texan: kind, courteous and safe.
“Everyone has so many reasons why they want to get home safely. Remember, so does every driver around you,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Each life lost is a reminder of why we all need to work together to end this streak of daily deaths.”
Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee said troopers see firsthand how everyday decisions behind the wheel can mean the difference between life and death. He said the partnership with TxDOT is a reminder that “getting home safely is a responsibility we all share.”
According to TxDOT, Texas recorded 3,763 traffic deaths in 2025, down nearly 10 percent from 4,162 in 2024. The agency called the decline encouraging but said it is up to all drivers to keep the trend going down.
TxDOT said it is investing $16 billion in safety improvements through the state’s 10-year plan, including cable barriers, rumble strips and other design features. The agency said it is also working on new ways to reduce crashes, including artificial intelligence projects such as automatic incident detection software, and is building innovative intersections such as roundabouts, which it said can reduce fatalities at intersections by 90 percent.
Drivers can help spread awareness by posting on social media the changes they will make behind the wheel using #EndTheStreakTX, the agency said. The campaign is part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative, with more information at DriveLikeATexan.com.
