Gov. Greg Abbott has announced four Skills Development Fund (SDF) grant awards totaling $1,726,092 to Houston City College, Workforce Solutions Lower Rio Grande Valley and local partners, according to an Oct. 29 news release from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
The grants, which TWC administers, will provide customized training for 689 new and current workers in high-demand occupations in manufacturing, technology, logistics and other fields, the agency said.
The Skills Development Fund is a TWC program that funds customized job training developed with local partners. The release said the grants went to the Houston and Rio Grande Valley areas.
Photos distributed with the release show TWC Chairman Joe Esparza and TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III joining local partners at “big check” ceremonies marking the awards, according to the captions.
TWC describes itself as a state agency dedicated to helping Texas employers, workers and communities prosper economically. More information about the Skills Development Fund grants is available through the agency’s website.
