Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott visited Killeen and Borger to celebrate their entry into the Texas Main Street Program. The site visits continue a long-standing state tradition, established in 1981, where Texas First Ladies tour the state to personally review accredited municipalities managed under the Texas Historical Commission.
The traveling events are designed to focus statewide attention on successful historic preservation, downtown revitalization progress, and localized corporate partnerships.
During the tour, Abbott said that the state is “blessed” with inspiring communities that consistently collaborate to provide an authentic Texas experience. She said that the Texas Main Street Program allows local history to shine while actively inspiring future community preservation efforts.
Part of the national Main Street America framework, the Texas Main Street Program provides technical resources, architectural design expertise, and operational planning support to a grassroots network of 80 designated communities across the state. State program coordinators utilize a trademarked “Four-Point Approach” that helps smaller municipalities leverage their historic properties, bolster independent small businesses, cultivate volunteer networks, and establish economically stable town centers.
