A recent analysis by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) highlights the essential role of plastics in various U.S. industries, including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and electronics. These sectors employ nearly 5 million Americans and contribute over $391 billion in wages. Texas emerges as a significant player due to its leadership in chemical production and plastics manufacturing.
Ross Eisenberg, president of America’s Plastic Makers, is set to present a “3-Point Plan” before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on the Environment. The plan aims to modernize recycling infrastructure, reduce waste, and enhance U.S. manufacturing competitiveness. Eisenberg emphasizes the importance of plastic for innovation across industries but stresses the need for improved recycling practices.
The ACC report titled “Plastics in American Manufacturing” reveals that nearly 27% of U.S. manufacturing output comes from sectors where plastic constitutes at least 5% of material inputs. The plastic manufacturing sector employs 670,000 people with nearly $50 billion in wages. Additionally, the plastic resin sector maintains a trade surplus of almost $22 billion.
Eisenberg’s testimony will advocate for advanced recycling technologies to increase the reuse of plastics and transform waste into valuable products. The proposed plan encourages policymakers to recognize advanced recycling as manufacturing, establish federal recycling standards, and assert American leadership in global efforts against plastic pollution.
“Our 3-Point Plan is a win-win,” states Eisenberg. “It would grow American manufacturing jobs, boost recycling, and position the U.S. as a global leader in plastic manufacturing and recycling.”
