TxDOT Highlights Autonomous Tools and AI Systems at 2026 Texas Innovation Invitational

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched its annual technology showcase, highlighting autonomous road-maintenance equipment, sequential safety lighting, and advanced artificial intelligence systems designed to upgrade state infrastructure.

Hosted alongside the Texas Innovation Alliance (TIA), the 2026 Texas Innovation Invitational brings together public officials, industry experts, and planners in Allen, Texas, from June 15 to June 17.

According to a June 15 news report from TxDOT, the agency is leveraging the multi-day event to demonstrate how emerging technologies can be deployed practically to reduce roadway hazards and protect state workers. Key highlights at the interactive showcase include “SPOT,” TxDOT’s semi-autonomous robotic dog, alongside cutting-edge unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and automated machinery built to handle high-risk field operations.

Agency crews are also utilizing the platform to evaluate real-world pilot programs, such as synchronized, sequential LED-lit traffic cones that generate a highly visible “runway” effect to guide nighttime drivers safely around active work zones.

Attendees are being introduced to a specialized road-symbol painting robot, which enables highway maintenance workers to safely outline intricate street markings via an in-cab touchscreen without ever stepping foot onto a live highway.

Erika Kemp, director of TxDOT’s Strategic Initiatives and Innovation Division, emphasized that the collaborative conference provides a critical launchpad for state leaders to align on forward-thinking frameworks as emerging technologies fundamentally reshape transit logistics.

Beyond public demonstrations and technical panels, the event features the agency’s signature S.T.A.R. Pitch Competition. The tournament allows regional transport teams to pitch actionable mobility concepts to an expert panel of judges, with the top-scoring group securing the Smart Transportation & Advanced Roadways (S.T.A.R.) Award to help fund and scale their regional infrastructure solutions.
