The Texas Department of Transportation is inviting Texans to help shape the state’s roadways for the next decade, opening a monthlong public comment period on its draft 2027 Unified Transportation Program. The plan would direct more than $95 billion to transportation projects across the state over the next 10 years, according to a July 6 news release from the agency.
The comment window opened Friday, July 3, and closes at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. The outreach comes as Texas continues to experience rapid population and economic growth, and the agency said public input will help prioritize funding over the coming decade.
“Hearing from Texans and our transportation partners is vital to help this plan improve Texans’ connectivity to communities, jobs and family, as well as enhance safety, quality of life and innovation throughout the state,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said. “The UTP remains strong and healthy, with a robust portfolio of projects that continues to advance statewide priorities.”
The UTP outlines a 10-year approach to project development focused on improving safety, reducing congestion and enhancing connectivity while preserving existing roadways, the agency said. Beyond highways, the program supports public transportation, maritime, aviation, rail, freight, international trade and bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. This year’s draft concentrates on advancing existing, high-priority projects already in development.
Texans can submit comments through several channels on TxDOT’s website, including an online form available in English, Arabic, Cantonese, Hindi, Mandarin, Spanish and Vietnamese. The agency will also host a virtual public hearing on the draft program Wednesday, July 29, at 2 p.m., which residents can join online or by phone at 800-717-1738. A recording of the hearing will be posted afterward, according to the release.
The Texas Transportation Commission is scheduled to vote on the 2027 UTP at its August meeting, a decision that will guide the next decade of transportation investment across the state.
