The Texas Workforce Commission has awarded Workforce Solutions Lower Rio Grande an $85,924 High Demand Job Training grant to prepare local students for long-term, in-demand careers, according to an Aug. 12 news release from the agency. The funds will equip students at Rio Grande City-Grulla Independent School District with specialized, high-demand skills.
“The technical training funded by this grant ensures that Texas students are equipped with the specialized expertise required to excel in our state’s fastest-growing sectors,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III in the release. “By providing the right tools and certifications today, we are opening doors for future jobseekers and ensuring a prosperous economic future for the Rio Grande Valley.”
Workforce Solutions Lower Rio Grande will use the grant in partnership with the Rio Grande City Economic Development Corporation to purchase equipment for construction, welding, culinary, automotive collision repair and dental assistant courses, the agency said. In addition, 80 students in the Accounting and Financial Services program will receive VITA/Tax Counseling certification training in partnership with South Texas College.
Treviño presented the award at a ceremony at Rio Grande City High School attended by state and local officials, according to the release.
The High Demand Job Training grant program is part of TWC’s statewide effort to support collaboration between Workforce Development Boards and local economic development entities, the agency said. The partnerships help create job training programs that prepare individuals across Texas communities for high-demand occupations, and businesses interested in the program can contact their local Workforce Solutions office.
