The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality assessed penalties totaling $2,012,293 against 88 regulated entities for violations of state environmental regulations, the agency announced in an Aug. 26 news release.
The bulk of that total came from the commission itself, which approved $1,837,963 in penalties against 47 regulated entities, according to the release. Separately, on Aug. 18 and Aug. 25, the agency’s executive director approved penalties totaling $174,330 against 41 entities.
Enforcement orders of this kind are the mechanism through which TCEQ resolves alleged violations of the state’s environmental rules by permitted facilities and operators, and the August round touched nearly every corner of the agency’s regulatory portfolio.
The commission issued agreed orders across nine enforcement categories, TCEQ said. Those covered one agriculture case, 16 air quality cases, one Edwards Aquifer case, one industrial wastewater discharge case, two multi-media cases, two municipal solid waste cases, 11 municipal wastewater discharge cases, four public water system cases and two water quality cases.
Default orders accounted for a smaller share of the commission’s action. According to the release, default orders were issued in one dry cleaner case, two multi-media cases, one municipal solid waste case, two public water system cases and one water quality case.
Air quality and municipal wastewater discharges made up the largest groups of agreed orders in the August round, based on the category counts listed by the agency.
