Governor Greg Abbott announced a Skills Development Fund grant award totaling $489,624 to Lamar State College Orange, according to an Aug. 27 news release from the Texas Workforce Commission.
The college will use the award in partnership with Arlanxeo, Chevron Phillips Chemical and Indorama Ventures, the release said. Through the grant, Lamar State College Orange will provide customized training for 241 new and current workers.
The training targets high-demand careers including fire and safety specialists, nurses, machinists, chemical engineers and lab technicians, among others, according to the commission.
State officials noted that TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Trevino III and local partners attended a big check ceremony marking the award.
