Comptroller Huffines Cites Texas Job Growth Outpacing National Trends

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines praised new employment data showing the state added 154,300 nonfarm jobs over 12 months, a 1.1 percent increase that outpaced the national growth rate by 0.8 percentage points.

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines praised the state’s latest employment figures, which show Texas adding 154,300 nonfarm jobs between September 2025 and September 2026, according to an Oct. 16 news release from the Comptroller of Public Accounts.

The agency said Texas’ workforce grew by 1.1 percent over those 12 months, outpacing the national annual job growth rate by 0.8 percentage points. The release cited data from the Texas Workforce Commission and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Texas’ economy continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience, with job growth that once again outperforms national trends,” Huffines said in the release. “While monthly shifts across industries are expected, the broader picture remains clear: Texas is benefiting from a dynamic, fast-moving economy supported by strong market fundamentals.”

The comptroller also tied the figures to the state’s tax debate. “I’m hopeful that this momentum translates into meaningful opportunities for families, workers, and businesses across the state, and I’m confident we can advance meaningful property tax relief that lowers housing costs for Texans,” Huffines said.

According to the release, the Manufacturing industry posted the largest private-sector over-the-month increase in September, adding 4,700 jobs. Professional and Business Services added 1,600 jobs over the month, while Information added 1,400.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Texas registered at 4.4 percent, unchanged from the prior month’s report, the comptroller’s office said.

The statement follows the Texas Workforce Commission’s monthly labor market release, which the Comptroller’s Office cited as its source for the employment data.
