Governor Greg Abbott announced Sept. 1 that $1,106,000 in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants have been awarded to five organizations in the Panhandle region as part of the Texas Veterans Commission’s Grants Across Texas Tour. According to the governor’s office, the funding, administered by the commission, will provide services to an estimated 836 local veterans.
The awards are part of a much larger statewide grant cycle. According to the Sept. 1 release, Texas Veterans Commission commissioners approved 190 grants in May totaling more than $40.8 million to 160 organizations across Texas, which are anticipated to provide direct services to more than 125,600 veterans, their dependents and surviving spouses.
“In Texas, we care about the well-being of our veterans,” Abbott said in the release. “These grants will provide crucial assistance so the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military will prosper in the Panhandle. Texas will always remember and honor the sacrifices that our veterans and their families have made for our country.”
The governor’s office listed the Panhandle recipients and their programs. Cornerstone Community Action Agency received $300,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes and another $300,000 for financial assistance. Lubbock County received $25,000 for pro bono legal services, and the Lubbock Regional MHMR Center received $200,000 for financial assistance. The Salvation Army in Abilene received $200,000 for financial assistance, and Potter County received $81,000 for its veterans treatment court.
“We’re incredibly thankful for the organizations across Texas that show up every day to support Texas veterans and their families,” Shawn Deabay, the commission’s deputy executive director and an Army veteran, said in the release. “This grant strengthens that work. It’s great seeing the community give back to those who served.”
According to the governor’s office, the Funds for Veterans’ Assistance program has awarded more than $400 million through 1,790 grants since 2009, through the current 2026-2027 grant cycle. The grants support services ranging from emergency financial assistance and transportation to legal services, family support, home modification and rental and mortgage assistance, the release said.
Veterans in need of assistance can find organizations providing help in their area through the commission’s Grant Services Directory, according to the release.
