Governor Greg Abbott announced $6,302,000 in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants awarded to 27 organizations in the Southeast Texas region, according to an Aug. 27 news release from the Office of the Texas Governor. The awards were made as part of the Texas Veterans Commission’s Grants Across Texas Tour.
Administered by the commission, the funding will provide services to an estimated 4,800 local veterans, the release said.
“Texans are forever indebted to our brave veterans who selflessly answered the call to serve in our nation’s military,” Governor Abbott said. He said the grants will give former service members “access to crucial services to improve their quality of life in southeast Texas and the Coastal Bend area.”
“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said Chip Osborne, the commission’s director of veteran services and an Army veteran. “Southeast Texas and the Coastal Bend have a strong military community and are home to many veterans.”
Among the largest awards, according to the release, are $400,000 to Harris County for non-clinical mental health services and $400,000 to Lone Star Legal Aid for pro bono legal services. The PTSD Foundation of America received $300,000 for clinical counseling and $300,000 for financial assistance, while Rebuilding Together Houston received $300,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes. Easter Seals of Greater Houston received $350,000 for clinical counseling and $100,000 for financial assistance, and Houston Habitat for Humanity received $350,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes. The United States Veterans Initiative received $250,000 for clinical counseling and $297,000 for homeless veteran support, and Montgomery County received $261,000 for a veterans treatment court plus $100,000 for financial assistance.
Other recipients named in the release include the Houston Area Urban League, Northwest Assistance Ministries, Castle Cares Community Ministries, the Cenikor Foundation, Hope for Warriors, Katy Christian Ministries, Galveston County, the Family Service Center of Galveston County, Fort Bend County, Fort Bend Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels and Much Much More, Colorado County Habitat for Humanity, After Military Service, Henry’s Home Horse and Human Sanctuary, Grace After Fire, REBOOT Recovery, SoleAna Stables, Santa Maria Hostel and Project Zero Alliance.
The commission’s board approved 190 grants totaling more than $40.8 million to 160 organizations statewide in May, the release said, with those awards expected to serve more than 125,600 veterans, dependents and surviving spouses. Since 2009 through the current 2026-2027 grant cycle, more than $400 million has been awarded through 1,790 Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants, according to the governor’s office.
