The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will give the public a chance to watch a prescribed burn at Bastrop State Park early this fall, the agency announced in an Aug. 28 media advisory.
The viewing event comes ahead of a broader round of prescribed burns that Bastrop State Park and TPWD plan to conduct during the fire season running from October 2026 through March 2027, according to the advisory.
The event will feature public viewing of a prescribed burn at the park with play-by-play narration by a member of TPWD’s Wildland Fire team, along with learning opportunities about prescribed fire, the agency said. The park superintendent and the TPWD Fire and Habitat Management Coordinator will be available for interviews. TPWD said more information is still to come.
Timing remains uncertain by design. Wildland fire personnel look for specific weather conditions before conducting a prescribed fire, and staff monitor forecasts continually in search of windows that ensure both safety and ecological success, the agency said.
Because of that conditional nature, TPWD said notification will be sent to interested media 24 to 48 hours in advance, along with other relevant materials. Outlets interested in attending can sign up through the agency’s form for media at the reintroduction burn, and additional details will be posted to the Bastrop State Park prescribed fire media kit.
