Texas Veterans Land Board to Hold Unaccompanied Veteran Burial for Navy Veteran in Corpus Christi

The Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery will conduct an Unaccompanied Veteran Burial on Aug. 21 for U.S. Navy veteran David Eugene Garrett, and the Texas General Land Office is inviting the public to attend.

The Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi will conduct an Unaccompanied Veteran Burial for U.S. Navy veteran Seaman Apprentice David Eugene Garrett at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, the Texas General Land Office announced in an Aug. 18 news release.

Garrett is not expected to have any next of kin attend the service. The GLO asked Texans to help spread word of the burial so that the veteran is not laid to rest alone.

Born June 26, 1945, Garrett served from October 1962 to August 1966, according to the release. The agency said he received the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon for his service.

Garrett will receive military honors. If no next of kin is present, the release said, a Veterans Land Board representative will accept the United States flag on his behalf.

The Texas Veterans Land Board works with local communities and fellow veterans service organizations to ensure no veteran is ever left behind, according to the agency, which maintains a statewide network of state veterans cemeteries and publishes information about its Unaccompanied Veteran Burial program online.
