TxDOT Volunteers Clear Denton-Area Highway in Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off

More than 30 volunteers from a Denton-Lewisville alumni chapter cleared a state highway they adopted as part of TxDOT’s Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off, part of the statewide Adopt-a-Highway program.

More than 30 members of the Denton–Lewisville Kappa Alpha Psi Alumni Chapter cleaned up a state-maintained road they recently adopted as part of TxDOT’s Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off, the agency said in a June 2 feature. The volunteers turned out on a humid Saturday afternoon to support the agency’s efforts to keep litter low.

The cleanup is part of the Adopt-a-Highway program, which lets volunteer groups take charge of cleaning stretches of state highway several times a year, according to the feature. The annual Trash-Off, held throughout April, is the program’s signature event.

Kirk Nobles, the chapter’s treasurer, said events like the cleanup strengthen community bonds. “We have a very active and supportive chapter,” he said in the feature. “Activities like this are a chance for brothers to bond while giving back to the community.”

In fiscal year 2025, Adopt-a-Highway and Trash-Off volunteers held 375 cleanup events in which 2,850 people cleared 750 miles of roads and collected nearly 76,000 pounds of litter across the state, the agency said, citing Statewide Adopt-a-Highway Coordinator Catherine Cromer.

Beyond picking up litter, the program helps make roads safer, protects natural resources and builds community pride, according to the feature. TxDOT said it relies on partnerships with civic organizations, community groups and volunteers to reduce litter and protect the environment.
